Packers Draft

Some random thoughts on the 2008 Packers draft…Brian Brohm could be the steal of the 2nd round, especially if you believe the glowing praise from ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreet, who believes Brohm may have been the best signal caller in the draft.

They also grabbed LSU’s Matt Flynn in the 7th round…when was the last time the Packers selected 2 QB’s in the same draft? (1989–Anthony Dilweg and Jeff Graham). 2 quarterbacks drafted…will this put an end to the Brett Favre comeback rumors? Please?

Jordy Nelson…with his small town background, and multiple skills, does he not remind you of former Packer Bill Schroeder?

Not to sound racially insensitive in any way, but when was the last time the Packers drafted 2 caucasian wide receivers in the same draft? (Jordy Nelson and Brett Swain). Checking back into the archives of the Packers media guide, the answer is…we’re not sure, but certainly not in the last 40 years.

No running backs selected, but they did invite UW-Whitewater’s Justin Beaver to the rookie orientation camp next weekend, possibly because they wouldn’t have any running back’s for the camp! We do wish Justin the best, along with former Badger punter Ken DeBauche, who signed as a free agent.

2 offensive tackles drafted in the middle rounds…an obvious sign that the team feels veteran tackles Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton, while still very effective, are wearing down from years of abuse in the pits.

Same story for 2nd round pick, cornerback Patrick Lee, who may be the eventual replacement for Al Harris/Charles Woodson.

Unusual in that Green Bay’s first pick was for a position where they may be the strongest (wide receiver), but that was also the case last year with Justin Harrell.

All in all, give Ted Thompson a grade of C, although it really should be an incomplete, because as Thompson has proven in the past, he knows a lot more than we do!
